Patients with diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a common disease among surgical patients. The VU University Medical Center uses specific glucose-control protocols for patients with diabetes mellitus undergoing surgery. These protocols (VUmc-breed Zorgpad Diabetesregulatie) aim to regulate perioperative glucose, to reduce the chance for postoperative wound infections and will result in stabilization of heart and vascular function during surgery. Do you suffer from diabetes mellitus? During your hospital stay the nurses and doctors will aim for stabilization of your glucose levels using a fixed treatment algorithm. Diabetes management is supported by diabetes nurses, diabetologists and anesthesiologists.
