Each year, between 140 and 165 PhD students at VU University Medical Center Amsterdam (VUmc) conclude their research with a doctoral thesis, making important contributions to academic research at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). This website is designed to inform PhD students at VUmc about regulations, opportunities, courses and much more.
There are different ways to obtain a doctorate at VU Amsterdam. The most common is to complete a doctorate programme as an employee of the medical center. But students from outside the university can also ask to be supervised by a professor at VUmc (thesis supervisor) when writing their thesis. All research within VUmc has to be carried out under the auspices of one of its constituent research institutes. This also applies to PhD research carried out outside VUmc.
Our research is part of the VU campus Human Health & Life Sciences theme, and organized in five multidisciplinary research institutes:
EMGO+ institute for health and care research
CCA - VUmc Cancer Center Amsterdam
ICaR-VU - Institute for Cardiovascular Research
MOVE Research Institute Amsterdam
