Welcome to the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics
Prof. dr. ir. Johannes (Hans) Brug:
"Those who have mastered methodology are capable of assessing the true value of research."
"VU University Medical Center (VUmc) has well-defined scientific ambitions. Methodology and the analysis of research data form the scientific basis for all medical practice. How do you make a correct diagnosis, how can you link your patient information to a specific prognosis, and how should you choose the right treatment? In this regard an effective assessment of patient information is especially important. The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics has in-house expertise in this area, and is able to assist VUmc researchers in solving methodological issues. Members of staff can call on our services for assistance with issues ranging from relatively simple questions to highly complex studies."
Cooperation keeps us on our toes
"Collaborative ventures with researchers from all parts of the organization keep us focused. Accordingly, we are constantly seeking to engage with other research groups, to jointly boost the research carried out at VUmc to a higher level. We carry out a lot of research with the EMGO Institute for Health and Care Research, the Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam (NCA), Institute for Cancer and Immunology (CCA/V-ICI), the Institute for Cardiovascular Research (Icar-VU) and Move. Within the department itself, there are also various lines of research running parallel to this applied research."
Learning by teaching others
"Besides the focus on research projects, we are keen to pass on our substantive know-how, and to train others in its use. After all, those who have mastered methodology are capable of assessing the true value of research, and of translating it into practical applications. We play an active part in the medical training programme here, while also participating in a number of Master's programmes and providing the postgraduate epidemiology programme (EpidM)."
