Research focus

Remond Fijneman is a molecular geneticist with special interest in the biology of colorectal cancer. His main research actvities focus on:
1) Identification of biomarkers for molecular imaging of colorectal cancer; and
2) The effects of hematopoietic (stromal) cells on colon tumor development.

Biosketch

After obtaining his university degree in biochemistry at the RU Leiden (1991), Remond Fijneman completed his PhD studies on "identification of susceptibility genes for non-familial (sporadic) cancer" at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam (1997). Next, he studied the link between inflammation and cancer at the Brigham and Women's Hospital / Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA) and the Netherlands Institute for Developmental Biology (Utrecht). In 2000, he went to the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam where he investigated the role of macrophages in tumor development. Since 2004, he is appointed at the Tumor Profiling Unit, headed by Prof.dr. G.A. Meijer. In addition to research activities, Remond Fijneman also coordinates the Master Oncology course "Tumor Biology and Clinical Behavior", and guides undergraduate and graduate students in medicine and biomedical sciences.
