Beatriz Carvalho's current research interests are three-fold. One, the identification of putative oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes involved in colorectal cancer (CRC) progression; two, the application of these biomarkers of progression in the development of faecal DNA-based tests for CRC screening; and three, the identification of biomarkers, which are able to predict risk of disease recurrence and response to therapy, in CRC.
The use of microarray technology (array CGH and expression microarrays) facilitated the finding of several candidate genes putatively involved in CRC progression, which are being followed up by in vitro functional studies.
Beatriz Carvalho is a molecular biologist with a specific interest in Oncobiology. After obtaining her degree in Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (Portugal) she followed a master course specialized in Oncobiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (Portugal), which resulted in a thesis on "Deletion mapping of long arm of chromosome 6 in gastric cancer". Following this line of research, she completed her PhD on "Chromosome 6q deletions in gastric carcinoma. A positional cloning approach to isolate cDNAs at 6q16.3-q23.3" at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (Portugal) in collaboration with the department of Clinical Genetics of the University of Groningen (the Netherlands). After a postdoctoral period at the department of Pathology of the VU University medical center Amsterdam, where she was involved in the set-up of the whole-genome BAC array platform, Beatriz Carvalho is, at the present moment, a senior scientist in the Tumor Profiling Unit, at the department of Pathology of the VU University Medical Center Amsterdam (The Netherlands).
