With this calculator one can experiment with the Erlang B or loss model. This model describes the relation between the number of arrivals, number of operational (or staffed) beds, refused admissions and the occupancy rate. The main result is that larger hospital units can operate at higher occupancy rates than smaller ones while attaining the same percentage of refused admissions (economies of scale). See Figure below.

Erlang C is a delay model where an arriving patient who finds all servers (e.g. beds, physicians) occupied enters a queue. Typical applications are the arrivals to an ED deparment or out-patient pre-assessment clinic.
